The problem is, that Thermostat valve needs a strong "kick of power" to move the thermostat pin. Standard Alkaline batteries drop quickly bellow 1.4-1.3V. It's even worse with rechargeable ones (like Eneloop).
I've solved the problem with mines by using Energizer Ultimate Lithium (but any Lithium batteries will do). Those are more expensive, but have a different characteristics which is ideal for motorized equipment or toys or anything that need a high "actuation force".
There's also one more thing - observe how often a Valve needs to re-calibrate or how often it needs to regulate itself. Maybe temperature in the room drops to quickly, or the hysteresis is too tight or you need to fix the montage (take the valve off, press the thermostat tip couple time, put it on again)

The batteries in my thermostat now only seem to be lasting around a week before they’re dead. Before the lasted for a year. Has something changed on the software of the thermostat? If so, any solution?

Ye in the last couple of months I have changed batteries every couple of weeks up to that they last a year at least I use good expensive batteries and still same outcome
Anyway the only solution seemed either to use an external 4,5 voltage power supply instead of batteries or to send it to repairing

can the firmware be updated to solve the problem?

This was a comment on a deleated topic, for the same problem 'zuscom
I changed the batteries in all 4 for identical new fully charged rechargeables ( 750mA ) a week ago. 3 are OK , one is using them every 2 days .. All the same firmware 78/249.'

Then how does the problem appear? HW failure?

'A soloution I have deployed is, opening up the battery compartment, get a typical USB cable and snip of the end and solder the +/- to the battery terminals. Most usb chargers are 5v which is fine for this, as 3x 1.5v AAA = 4.5v. Has been plugged in for months now and works as it did with batteries. Still crap there is no official fix but I wasnt bothered trying to send back and be messed about. '
'I am trying the solution avoid to use accelerometer because my display stuck in horizontal position. Since 3 weeks I set my square thermostat in horizontal position with display face up. It seems to work well and the batteries are fully charged. I hope this test will be useful for someone...' --> Please note that this solution seamed to work only for one person…

thanks a lot! this helps.
It looks like an issue related to accelerometer. Maybe another HW weakness (besides the display, which I already replaced). Still hope for a SW patch from supplier, but, until then, I'll try to use a power supply instead of batteries.

I also have this problem. Batteries lasted over a year. Recently I have had to change them every couple of weeks.

Same issue here and in another forum post it appears. https://helpcenter.netatmo.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/18494328868626-Thermostat-battery-drainage
It's a very frequent problem... often (or always) associated with the defeat in the automatic rotation of display
The topic 'Smart Thermostat] Thermostat battery drainage'

I'll plug that to a phone charger'
