Thermostat showing wrong temperature

My thermostat is showing a wrong temperature: while in the house it's 23°, on its display I read 48/50 degrees!
I opened it, and I noticed that there is some corrosion in the battery slot, as if previous batteries would have leaked.
Could it be the cause?
And what can I do now? Replace the device or repair it?
