OK. Sadly I gave them back the old router for recycling so I will need to buy another to try out what you're suggesting. I assume the same fix couldn't be achieved using a range extender?

Thanks for the speedy reply. Am I right that this means buying a second router and connecting this into the one provided by my internet provider via ethernet cable?
