Testing Smoke Alarm

How much smoke is needed to trigger the alarm? I sound tested the alarm which wasn't very loud. I search for this issue and read that the test alarm is deliberately quieter and a real alarm is much louder. I then tried to trigger the alarm by lighting a match under it and extinguishing. The alarm wasn't triggered at all.
