Anemometer is way off

martin

Hi,

A week ago I installed my anemometer.

Unfortunately it shows only less that half of the correct wind speed. The anemometer is placed 1.5 m about the chimney in a total height of 8-9 m. We live very close to the airport where the Danish Meteorological Institute has an official station and comparing the reading shows that Netatmo constantly shows less than half of the current wind speed. There are no obstacles that can explain the reading, a even a the ground level I can clearly tell that the meter is way off by just feeling the wind.

Is there something wrong with the anemometer or is just the accuracy I can expect from this device?

Thanks,
Martin

    Hi Martin,

I've found your post and also read your previous one. You're saying that you're 2-3 km away from the airport, who's measurements you're using as a reference. I don't know if your anemometer is functioning well, but what I can say is that the distance, for wind measurements is to big to allow meaningful comparisons, especially in urban environments.

The friction factor, which might be completely different from the one at the airport, might explain the difference.

I'm living 1 km from GVA airport, my anemometer is 34 m high from the ground and there are also differences. Have you tried to compare the patterns of the wind curves, especially the hourly average? They might very well be parallel.

    Kind regards,

    Tom
