Netatmo does not take responsibility for bugged firmware 5.22 and bricked camera (fixed green light)

My camera is bricked after the firmware update 5.22. It turns on with a fixed green light and the camera does not respond. I opened a support ticket and the technician asked me to do all the steps we already know (connect the camera directly to my Windows computer and to the router via ethernet). Obviously it did not solve anything because the camera is bricked. Since the purchase was made in 2019, I am out of warranty so I was offered a 10% discount coupon to buy a new one in the online store.

My camera had worked perfectly since 2019 until the recent firmware update 5.22. I am not the only one with this situation, I can read in the community messages that there are several more cases and all recent, approximately 1 month, coincidence? I do not think so.

I can prove that the problem is software and not hardware. Since my camera is bricked, I have tried to start it with 2 different microSD cards, of different brands and storage, and both have become corrupted. For some reason the camera repartitions the memory, creating 2 active primary partitions, one of approximately 1GB and another partition, with the rest of the capacity, only visible through the disk manager in Windows. As I mentioned, I tried with 2 different microSD cards, of different capacities, and both were repartitioned in the manner described. (see attached images). I realized this situation after using the microSD in the camera and then seeing in Windows the 8GB memory could only be formatted with a maximum capacity of 1GB. Clearly, this situation prevents the camera from starting normally, with 2 active primary partitions simultaneously.

I have been a loyal customer since 2018 when I bought my first netatmo thermostat, and it is unfortunate that a product that worked perfectly is now a brick, not due to user misuse, but due to a buggy update that is installed automatically.

I still have hope for a solution, but I see it as difficult. Greetings.

    Hi,

    I am sorry you are facing issues with your Netatmo device. I see that your case as been handled by our Support team. However, I would like to clarify some points.

    For security concerns, the SD card is encrypted. When you insert a SD card in the camera, it automatically gets prepared by the camera which creates two partitions. 

    • One is about approximately 1GB and is reserved for the system. 
    • The second one is the rest of the SD card and is reserved for the video storage.

    As Windows cannot access the SD card content, these two partitions only show up properly in the Disk Manager. 

    If you try to format the SD card using Windows Explorer, it will only handle the 1GB partition and ignore the rest. 

    I hope this helps you gain a clearer perspective.

    So what is the fix for a Welcome camera that will not initialize? All I get is an intermittent flashing red light on the camera when trying to activate the camera but my phone nor PC can find the camera (wired or blue tooth). I would also like to delete this camera out of my Netatmo profile/list of devices but have not found out where this can be accomplished.

    Any updates on this issue? Got one aswell and cant get into pair mode by phone or PC connection. Just keeps showing solid green and once in a while quicky flashing red.

    Unfortunately, I just read this thread. My Netatmo Welcome indoor camera stopped working about a month or two ago, after years of use, and I couldn't figure out why. I tried resetting it and removing it from the app, but during the pairing process, it stopped working and the green LED remained flashing.
    I bought a new one, set it up, and it paired successfully. However, after a minute, the firmware update started, the camera disconnected, and now it's in the EXACT SAME SITUATION as the other one, which was stuck with a flashing green or red LED.

    This is illegal. How is it possible that it's still being sold and Netatmo can't fix the problem?

    Fixed green light same problem. Netatmo is irresponsible company.
