Here they’re saying that you need to have a transformer with DC output, but that’s not true if I understand you correctly.
It can take both, the Netatmo transformers are actually DC.
But AC is more common for doorbells.
Minimum is 12 VA I would say, 16VA if the distance is more 5 meters.
