Did you use the new thermostat in combination with the new relay? It is not for nothing that they come in pairs, they are linked. A new thermostat will not connect with an old relay.

No, unfortunately you can't. The thermostat and the relay are coupled. An old relay will not work with another thermostat. You always have to buy a set of those two.
