Smart Door Lock completely unlocked

Hello, Today I walked outside and wanted to activate the smart door lock so I could turn the knob to lock it outside. Turns out the smart door lock wasn’t locked at all!!! I could turn the knob without activating it and could lock and unlock. I opened the app and it showed batteries are empty, yet I did not receive any notifications upfront on low battery or alike. Luckily the physical door was still open. So inside I opened the smart door lock handle and saw one of the factory supplied batteries leaked out. How is it possible that the lock remains open??? Again, without activation it was open continuously whilst I fetched batteries etc. Don’t want to think about what could have happened during the nights or if I had been on vacation. I am deeply concerned about the safety now and also would your insurance cover any theft if criminals steal from my home because of an open door lock??? Thank you.
