How does the Anticipation work?

What is Anticipation?

Anticipation is an intelligent feature of Netatmo products designed to ensure maximum comfort.
It calculates the optimal time to start heating so that your home reaches the desired temperature exactly at the time you scheduled.
This means you enjoy the temperature you want, at the moment you want it—without waiting.

To achieve this, Anticipation uses:

  • The thermal model of your home, built over time by Netatmo. This model estimates how long it takes to heat your home based on its characteristics (insulation, size, thermal inertia).

  • The outdoor temperature, obtained from local weather forecasts or the Netatmo Weather Station Outdoor Module.
The colder it is outside, the earlier the heating needs to start—and vice versa.

During the first weeks

Before the thermal model of your home is learned, Anticipation defaults to 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
After this learning period, the system adapts based on your home’s thermal behavior and outdoor conditions.
It usually takes two weeks to learn the home thermal model, but it can be shorter or longer depending on heating usage and the difference between Comfort and Eco/Night temperatures: the more the better.

What happens if outdoor temperature data is unavailable?

If outdoor temperature readings are missing for several hours, Anticipation also defaults to 30 minutes.
This can happen in the following cases:

  • Loss of wireless connection between the Thermostat and Thermo Hub [more info].

  • Wi-Fi router disconnected from the Internet or no Wi-Fi connection between the Thermo Hub and the router [more info].

How to enable or disable Anticipation?

You can turn the Anticipation on or off in the Home + Control app:
Thermal Comfort > Operating mode > Anticipation.
