Advanced network troubleshooting guide.

Several factors can prevent wireless devices from working properly, such as physical interference and Wi-Fi access point configuration. In this article, we will first look at ways to reduce any physical interference then provide a few tips on how to connect Netatmo devices to your Wi-Fi access point:

Reducing the risk of interference

  1. Check the distance between the router and the Wi-Fi module (the one powered by the mains). Walls and some surfaces can absorb the wireless signal. We recommend installing a Wi-Fi repeater in the room in which you wish to install your Netatmo device to boost the signal.
  2. It is best if the router and the Wi-Fi module are not:
    • Behind a TV.
    • Near an aquarium.
    • Placed in or under a metal object.
    • Placed in a closed furniture.
    • Near a large amount of wires and cords.
    • Near any wireless devices.
  3. If you have one of these devices at home, turn them off temporarily and check your connection (which could take up to 15 minutes):
    • Laptops, tablets, cordless phones, etc.
    • Wireless printers, speakers and any other wireless device.
    • IP cameras.
    • Microwaves (when in use).

If things improve, try to increase the distance between your Netatmo products and the device in question. You may not be able to use them at the same time.

Access point configuration

Basic

  • Reboot the Wi-Fi router.
  • If there are multiple Wi-Fi access points (repeater / booster / extender) in your network, be sure to set different name (SSID) for each access point. Then make sure the Wi-Fi module is setup to connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

Advanced

For the next steps, connect to the router’s configuration page. To do so, refer to the router’s user manual.

Note: if no manual, search on an Internet browser: "how to access 'name of the router'".

  • If the router is compatible with the WPA3 security protocol, check that WPA2 is also enabled (Netatmo products can only connect with WPA2). If "WPA2/WPA3 mixed" mode is not available, use WPA2 only.
  • Try to update the router to its latest firmware version.
  • Try to set a simpler Wi-Fi password, without special characters.
  • Ensure there is no MAC filtering enabled on the router (or make sure the Relay is in the white-list).
  • Ensure access restriction (parental control, etc.) is disabled.
  • Check if the router has a sleep function. If so, disable that function (especially if Netatmo products disconnect and reconnect every day at the same time).
  • Disable the Wi-Fi channel restriction (enable automatic selection), or select channel 1, 6 or 11.
  • If the router is 5GHz compatible, please check that 2.4GHz is also enabled (Netatmo products can only connect to 2.4GHz networks) and that the two networks have a different name (SSID).
  • Try to disable 5GHz.
  • See if UPnP is enabled. We recommend UPnP be enabled.
  • Try replacing the current DNS servers with Google's (Primary: 8.8.8.8 / Secondary: 8.8.4.4).
  • Please check if your router has any firewall / port filtering. If so:
    • Open the 25050 port (TCP).
    • Assign the Wi-Fi module a static IP with its MAC address.

If your network is correctly configured, please provide us with the following details so that our technical teams can help you with the best efficiency:

  • which device was used to do the installation (mobile device or computer)
  • its brand and model if it is a mobile device
  • its operating system (Android or iOS) as well as its version number
  • the error message obtained (a screenshot if possible)
